Science Museum Virtual Trip Report : Shanghai Science & Technology Museum

  • How are you interfacing with the museum?

    • Did you use a computer, VR headset, or other means to transport inside the museum?

I only use my computer; the website has its own virtual trip site. It does have the VR option on the site, but it's also only made for a photo VR. And the virtual area is more like 360 photos of the different sections of the museum.

  • How do you navigate in? What works, what doesn't?

In the virtual trip site, every section is a 360 photo. I can use my mouse to control my view(very much like Google Maps). The 360 photos have some arrow that leads you to other sections that you can choose, or there is a menu that you can choose what area you want.

  • What’s the atmosphere? Is it photo-real or stylized? Is there a video or is it all stills?

It is not vivid. I wish I could have had a better experience of the virtual trip. The 360 photo has poor quality and can not see the caption on board; some sections have external caption or video demo(robort section). The it'se site is not decent.

  • What’s the interaction? Is there a one-to-one correspondence with the brick and mortar museum, or is the experience designed specifically as a digital experience? What works for you? What would you change?

It is literally the photo of the actual museum. The whole experience is not designed for a digital experience. I think the layout works for me to choose the section I want, and it is clear. Some interactive parts should have some 3D animation with some interaction(like web games), not only videos.

  • Every place has an emotional, social and intellectual gestalt. Do your best to describe it.

I used to be there in person when I was 12. The experience of a virtual trip is not as fun as my in-person trip memories. But even for the exact same exhibition, I can have a different point of view now. It is weird and exciting to visit someplace that I have person memorized to it and far away from where I am right now; it should be better.

  • A word (or two) for its personality?

    average

  • A memorable object, exhibit, hall, or interaction (person-to-person)

The large-scale real scene model still looks good in the animal section in the photo. There is no interaction in the virtual experience. When I click some interaction part(in the actual museum), it only shows its picture.

  • Is it a social environment (like VR) If so, how do people socialize at the museum?

It's not. It is totally a one-man experience, not designed for socialization at all.

You can like the photo. It has 1734 likes now.

  • If it’s not a social environment, could it be? What would you change to make it a social environment?

First of all, I think it should have more interaction on the web, and at least people can leave their comments. As I mentioned before, I wish the interaction could be an online web game, so if the game can be a group game with other visitors, that can be much fun.

  • Think about what behaviors the virtual museum space supports in regards to learning and engaging the content. Can you engage, or go a little deeper than the surface? Can you control anything in the real environment from the virtual one?

I can only control my viewpoint; everything is very on the surface. Many exhibitions are lack content, can not even read the caption clearly. Also, some of the 360 photos only show the entries of a specific facility. I can't even know what does what.

  • Spend a few minutes on the actual museum’s website.

    • Does the website ‘feel” like it’s specific to the museum?

The web is not well designed( feels like some web from 10 years ago), Only some necessary information like open hours. And I can tell some pieces of information are not updated on time.

    • Would you ever go back to the website? Why?

Not really, and I kind of understand why the web experience is that bad. Because in China, people are not used to looking for information on the web, most organizations have their own social media or mini-app. People would love to spend more time on that instant of website. I think this kind of customer habit makes the website so behind and not well updated.
