Fotografiska Trip Report

  • Your impressions of the look and feel of the whole place.

    • What works, what doesn’t?

The building of the Musume is a historical building; it gives me a kind of elegant and exclusive feeling. Unlike other museums, the interior design is like a very intimate art salon(or more like a gallery ). I think it matches the purpose of the museum; as a photo museum, they don't need a large space for collections; the mood and the atmosphere is more important.

  • Do you feel welcomed, is the place intimidating or comfortable, what’s the atmosphere?

The whole place gives a very high-end feeling. The lighting inside is dark; only works on the wall are lighted up. The atmosphere is kind of like a private art club. I think they do want audiences to have this kind of luxury feeling.

  • Every place has an emotional, social and intellectual gestalt. Do your best to describe it.

The emotion is quite Luxury, Exclusive, High-end; maybe it's because of the building? At the same time, it is also trendy because the background music is pop songs; that's why I think it feels like a club.

  • A word (or two) for its personality?

    Art Club

  • A memorable object, exhibit, hall, or interaction (person-to-person)

There is a section in the NUDE exhibition there is a human shape lightbox, the whole corner looks visually very stand out.

  • Hospitality: how hard is it to find the bathrooms, how nice are the guards, can you find your way around.

The facilities are very nice, the guards are friendly, and they are right at the gate. Each floor does not have guards.

  • Who’s there? Ages, demographics, and other details you notice about visitors.

    • Are they coming as one, twos, or in groups?

Many people come in small groups and also many individuals. Young people, mid-age, and the elder are the main audiences, I think. Don't see many children. I guess it's not a family-style museum.

  • How do people socialize at the museum?

    • Does anyone socialize outside their group?

Maybe, there are many social places in the building.

    • Does anyone ask questions?

As a photo museum, I think people just walk around and see the arts.

    • Did you ask a question or socialize?

      No

  • Think about what behaviors the museum space supports in regards to socializing, learning, and engagement.

I think it is very much like a club. You can even grab a drink from the bar in the lobby and walk through the exhibition. Also, there are many social places in the exhibition, chairs, and tables for people to sit and talk.

  • Notice the exhibits.

    • Are they designed for one person, two people, or a group?

I think it is designed for small group or one person

    • Is there a deep dive into content, or is the information “scaffolded” appropriately?

I think the content is nice, and the selection of photos is diverse. Also, the words are write by some writers, so I think the content are pretty nice.

    • If there are any interactive technology exhibits, are they working? How do people interact with them? Get granular, think input/output.

There are no interactions in a traditional photography museum, more like videos and different ways to arrange photos.

  • Spend a few minutes on the museum’s website.

    • Does the website ‘feel” like it’s specific to the museum?

Yes, it's a well-designed website and has many pictures and information

    • Would you ever go back to the website? Why?

Yes, because they have an archive section on the website, including pictures and words of the previous exhibitions, I think that's very helpful to look through when I need it.

  • Missed Opportunities… think about what you would change or improve.

I think it is one of the best photo Musume I have ever been to, and I think the way they combine with the concept of a social club is very interesting. Maybe I will have a clear target for the audience. The background music sometimes makes me feel out of the content.
